Living Materials Care and Handling Guide
Using live organisms during classroom instruction,
especially with inquiry-based science curricula such as STC® and STC/MS,
can greatly enhance and extend student learning. Children have an
opportunity to observe, handle, and care for organisms that they probably
have never seen or touched before. These first-hand experiences are exciting
for youngsters and can improve their learning.
However, most organisms have specific habitat requirements for shelter,
food, water, and temperature. If these needs aren’t met, your organisms may
sicken or even die, which of course diminishes students’ learning
opportunities. That’s why Carolina has created this documentto help ensure
your use of living materials in the classroom is successful. The guide
includes care and handling instructions for more than 35 organismsfrom
algae to WOWBugsthat are used in STC®, STC/MS, and other hands-on science
kits.
