About STC Units...
An STC unit is a comprehensive package
containing everything needed for a class of 30 students to cover a key science topic in
about eight weeks. Each unit comes in one or more large, durable plastic containers with
hinged, lockable lids. Components include:
 |
Teacher's
Guide - containing a sequence of
about 17 lessons. |
 |
Student Investigations books - a set of 15
reusable books for grades 36. Glossaries are now
available for download. |
 |
Materials
- all
equipment required for the lessons except a few items commonly found at home or in the
classroom. |
Unit refurbishment sets are available to
replenish materials typically used up during the course of a unit.
Complete parts listings
are also available, and items can be ordered separately.
Teacher's Guide
The depth and detail found in every Teacher's Guide is
what makes STC a leader in elementary science programs. You receive detailed plans
in every STC Teachers Guide that will significantly enhance your instruction as well
as simplify preparation. It will also show you how to assess student learning as you
progress through the unit.
Student Investigations Books
STC Student Activity books are written with clear, concise
instructions in language your students will easily understand.
Available for grades 3–6, the books are reusable and
designed for two students to share. They are organized into
easy-to-follow lessons that mirror the Teacher’s Guide.
|
The Student
Investigations book contains these four sections for every
lesson: |
| 1. |
Think and
Wonder - Presents the lesson objectives within a logical
context. |
| 2. |
Materials -
Lists the materials required to complete the lesson. |
| 3. |
Find Out for
Yourself - Guides students step-by-step through
the lesson’s procedures including setting up,
experimenting, observing and recording, and handling data. |
| 4. |
Ideas to
Explore - Strategic questions encourage students to
engage in additional activities that will help them extend
or apply what they have learned. |

Achieving Literacy Through Science:
The STC Glossaries
Staying in step with the needs of educators who wish to integrate science with
literacy, the National Science Resources Center has added
a brief glossary of
vocabulary to each ©2002 STC student book. (The same glossary is also found in
the ©2002 Teacher’s Guide.)Each unit’s glossary is provided as an additional
resource for both teachers and students, to facilitate discussion and perhaps
enhance other unit activities. The definitions are not unit specific, but are
intended to apply across the STC curriculum.
Under no circumstances should students be required to memorize the terms or
definitions presented in the glossary.
STC glossaries may be copied, as necessary, by the
teacher in quantities sufficient for the students in his or her classroom. Also
for purposes of classroom use only, the teacher may make an overhead
transparency of any glossary page. Otherwise, no part of an STC student book or
Teacher’s Guide may be reproduced by any mechanical, photographic, or electronic
process, or in the form of a phonographic recording, nor may it be stored in a
retrieval system, transmitted, or otherwise copied for public or private use
without permission in writing from the National Science Resources Center, except
for the purposes of official use by the U.S. government.
