Overview

The Benefits of STC®
STC is Flexible

The complete STC program can serve as an entire science curriculum for grades K–6. Or you can select individual units to incorporate into your existing curriculum. The modular design makes it easy for a school or school system to implement the program gradually over time.

In addition, you’ll receive helpful suggestions for linking science lessons with other subject areas, including math, language arts, social studies, and the arts. Extensive bibliographies list a variety of appropriate supplemental books, audio-visuals, and computer software that can enhance instruction. STC’s flexibility makes it easy to incorporate this innovative program in a way that best fits your specific needs.

STC is Classroom Tested
Curriculum developers at the National Science Resources Center (NSRC) worked in collaboration with scientists and elementary educators to produce the STC units. The developers, also experienced classroom teachers, drafted a sequence of lessons for each unit and trial taught the unit at a school in the Washington, DC, area.

After evaluating the unit’s effectiveness in the classroom, the developers wrote a field-test edition of the teacher’s guide and student materials. The unit was then field-tested nationally in diverse classrooms in urban, suburban, and rural settings and was later revised. Comments and suggestions from the teachers at the field-test sites and feedback from the STC Advisory Panel of scientists and educators assured that the units are as effective as possible for teachers and students.

STC is Age Appropriate
As every STC unit was developed, careful attention was given to the diverse learning styles and the developmental readiness of children. This applied both to the concepts in each unit and the way in which these concepts were presented. In general, the units are most effective at the suggested grade level and up or down a grade. With teacher modifications, the range can be widened.

STC is Teacher Friendly
The key to the successful use of any STC unit is the comprehensive Teacher’s Guide. Each Guide provides in-depth information on how to prepare for and lead every activity in the unit as well as assess student progress. Notes and classroom management tips help you efficiently manage all materials. Complete preparation steps make planning and implementing each lesson easy and efficient. You’ll find goals for the entire unit, objectives for individual lessons, topics for class discussion, student questions and their answers, an extensive bibliography, and much more. The Teacher’s Guide is what makes STC a leader in elementary science programs.

STC is Affordable
Each STC unit provides enough materials for eight weeks of instruction for a group of 30 students. That means that the per-student expense of this program works out to be just pennies a day.

In addition, STC units use everyday materials as much as possible. Many of the items last through repeated uses. Consumable items can be replaced quickly and easily either by line-item ordering (in small quantities and bulk) or with an economical unit refurbishment set. For bulk quantity prices of any STC materials, call Carolina (800-227-1150) and ask for the Quotations Department.
