Living Materials Information

Duckweed
(Lemna minor)

Materials
3 holding tanks (1-gal plastic milk jugs cut in half or cake pans work well)
4–5 liters of water
300 duckweed plants

Procedure
The holding tanks do not need to be deep (1–2 inches is plenty), but they do need to have enough surface area so that the plants form a single layer on the water’s surface. Overcrowding will block light and may kill some of the plants. Add water to the tanks until it is 1–2 inches deep.

Duckweed is hardy and very easy to maintain. Open the shipping container immediately upon arrival and place the duckweed in the holding tanks until you are ready to distribute it to the class. Place the holding tanks in a brightly lit area or provide artificial illumination.
