STC PROGRAM Update
Fall 2006
What’s new:
Recent
STC PROGRAM™ Kit Component Changes
Carolina is always working to improve the STC
PROGRAM™ units, to better meet the needs of students and teachers. Kit
components occasionally change in order to improve unit safety, expand
the unit's educational scope, or when a vendor discontinues an item.
A component change in an STC® or STC/MS™ unit may lead to
revised instructions for teachers and/or students. Until the unit’s
printed materials are revised and reprinted, kits or refurbishment sets
purchased from Carolina will include an errata sheet. The errata sheet
provides new teaching instructions and, if necessary, revised book pages
to be photocopied for teachers and students.
Here’s a list of recent kit component changes
and associated errata sheets now on Carolina’s Web site.
Electric Circuits
component change
In May 2006, a magnetic compass was added to
the unit kit.
The compass
is used in Lessons 2 and 8 and introduces the concept that
electricity
flowing through a circuit may produce heat, light, and
magnetism. If you’d like to purchase a set of the compasses
to add to your Electric Circuits kit, order:
WW-97-3432, Magnetic Compass, Pack of 30
Price: $57.95
To place
an order, call 800.334.5551 or fax 800.222.7112.
Then
download the errata sheet set below that matches your unit
teacher’s guide.
Food
Chemistry
component changes
In April 2006,
peanuts and granola bars were removed from the unit kit
because peanut and wheat products can be serious allergens
for some people. Beef sticks have been substituted for
peanuts as a test food, and doughnuts will be used in place
of granola bars. Because doughnuts are a perishable item
that spoils quickly, they are not supplied in the kit but
instead have been identified with an asterisk in the
Food Chemistry Teacher’s Guide Materials List as items that are
available in most schools or can be brought from home.
Rocks and
Minerals
component change
In recent years one of the minerals in the
unit kit—Iceland spar calcite—has been difficult to obtain.
Therefore, in June 2006 Carolina replaced
Iceland
spar calcite in the class set of mineral specimens with
another type of calcite. The new type of calcite is still
labeled “D” in the class minerals set.
So that
students may observe the double-refractive properties unique
to clear Iceland spar calcite, one specimen is still
included in the class minerals set. This single specimen is
to be used as a class display during Lesson 8.
Human Body
Systems
component change
Because tree nuts such as walnuts can be a
serious allergen in some people, walnuts will no longer be
supplied as a test food in the Human Body Systems
unit. Sunflower seeds have been substituted in place of
walnuts.
