In this session, students will explore how different types of organisms are connected to one another in a habitat. They will review and discuss the concepts of predator and prey, food chains, and food webs. Throughout students’ investigations, they will examine the key concept of how all organisms are affected when one type of organism is removed from the habitat.
Working in pairs, students will create an open ocean food web using a set of organism cards. The teacher will begin the investigation by reviewing the concept of an open ocean food web and how the food web works. The teacher will then tape the Sunlight, Gases, and Nutrients in the Water cards to the board. When students notice that their organism would consume one of the other organisms added to the board, they will need to draw arrows from one card to the other to connect them together. The students will be given about 15–20 minutes to complete the food web. Once all of the students have added their organisms to the board, the students will debrief as a class and discuss what they notice about the food web. They will then be able to demonstrate their learning through a variety of ways including class discussions, pair discussions, and individual writing assignments.
This activity will accommodate a class of 32 students.
