Visualize that a student who seems timid about science and math becomes engrossed in an activity, then realizes she is doing (and enjoying!) what a scientist does. Visualize that a student with below-average academic skills figures out a new way to measure the height of a bubble, and enjoys an immeasurably important sense of success. Imagine a classroom of students going eagerly from station to station to try a variety of fascinating experiments with bubbles. Signs at each different bubble station challenge students to explore a variety of concepts, but the student’s own sense of wonder and curiosity is paramount.
The free exploration of Bubble Festival allows children to learn some important things that may be difficult for us to anticipate, label, or even detect at the time. In “Bubble Measurement” for example, the approaches of your students will depend on background and experience. While one student may focus on the concept that a bubble can be measured, another may notice a relationship between circumference and diameter. Keeping the open-ended tone to all the activities will help enable all students to succeed. For older students,
Bubble Festival is an invitation to discuss and investigate themes such as matter, energy, stability, patterns of change, and structure.
