Evidence of effectiveness
The results of state standardized tests are beginning to show that
student learning increases after the use of an inquiry-based science
curriculum such as STC®.
 |
Delaware
school districts have based their elementary science
instructional program almost entirely on STC® units. In 2003,
more than 88% of students in grade 4 met or exceeded the state’s
performance standards for science. The same year, nearly 75% of
grade 6 students achieved that level (up from 61% in 2000). No
other discipline had student scores this high. |

Educational
studies are providing similar evidence about student learning in
science. Remarkably, the studies also indicate this benefit extends
to subjects like reading, writing, language development, and math.

Literature Links
STC units offer numerous opportunities for integrating reading into the curriculum. Although each STC Teacher's Guide includes a bibliography of nonfiction science trade books and fictional children's literature related to the unit's topics,
we have compiled
Literature
Links

an auxiliary list of recently published,
age-appropriate literature (fiction and nonfiction)
to extend learning.

Material
Safety Data Sheets
All STC unit kits and refurbishment sets that
contain chemical substances (e.g., alum, talc,
and ammonia) now include a set of Material Safety
Data Sheets (MSDS) for those materials. MSDSs
outline any known health or safety hazards associated
with a chemical and explain how the material can
be safely handled, used, and stored.

Request the free Carolina™ Curriculum catalog
(Includes STC® and STC/MS™)
Our catalog features the acclaimed science
curriculum for grades K–8
developed by the National Science Resources Center, which is
operated jointly by the National Academy of Sciences and the
Smithsonian Institution. The program, published exclusively by
Carolina Biological Supply Company, features 24 hands-on units that
cover basic topics in life, earth, and physical science and
technological design. Includes full unit descriptions.
|
Sole source letter
STC units are published and
distributed exclusively by Carolina Biological Supply Company. No
other vendor produces or distributes these materials. If your
school, district, or state purchasing regulations require a letter
stating that Carolina is the only source of the STC kits, click on
the link below.
|
STC classroom
safety sheets
All STC unit kits now include classroom safety
sheets that contain a summary of the safety notes
found in the STC teacher's guides and other pertinent
information. Safety sheets have been developed
for 2 grade spans: grades one to 2 and grades
3 to 6. Since safety sheets are to be read by
students, the appropriate level of writing is
used for each grade span to ensure easy comprehension.
Spanish translations are also available.

STC
Meets the Standards
This publication provides complete
analysis of the science content standards met
by the various units in the Science and Technology
for Children® program. If
you would like a full correlation that details
specific links between the individual STC units
and the components of each content standard, you
may download the text of our book.

A
free newsletter devoted to the STC PROGRAM™, STC
PROGRAM
Update features articles about the use of
STC and STC/MS units in classrooms across America.
Update also includes reports from school
districts on their STC PROGRAM implementation, articles
about new STC products, troubleshooting tips,
and letters from teachers.

STC®-STC/MS™ strands of learning
STC and STC/MS modules contain
learning strands (also known as conceptual threads), which means
that certain scientific concepts are emphasized in several different
units. Some learning strands are found in units at the same grade.
Other concepts occur in units from a span of grade levels.

Tips
for handling and using kit components
Carolina’s STC and STC/MS kit components have been especially selected or designed by the National Science Resources Center for use in the kits. Learn more about how to handle or deal with some specific kit components.

Unit conceptual storylines
A conceptual storyline is a
visual representation of the major concepts that are developed
during the lessons of an inquiry-based science unit. The conceptual
storylines for all STC units have been compiled into one document to
provide an overview of lesson flow and show how concepts build on
each other throughout the units.

Unit training outlines
Carolina highly recommends
pre-service training before teachers use an STC unit in the
classroom for the first time. During training, teachers can work
through activities in the unit and learn management tips from
experienced users of the materials. Both the
NSRC and Carolina offer this type of professional development, but if you
wish to conduct your own training, Carolina offers free training
guides.
