Living Materials Information

Isopods
(pill bug: Armadillidium vulgare; sow bug: Porcellio laevis)

Materials
2 holding tanks
Two 270-mL (9-oz) cups of damp woodland soil
Leaf matter, a piece of bark, and a slice of potato for food in each holding tank
Pill bug

Sow bug

Procedure
Prepare the holding tanks by adding a 1" layer of damp woodland soil to the bottom of each. Then place some leaf matter and a piece of bark for a hiding place into each tank. After you have prepared the holding tanks, tip the isopods into them. Add a slice of potato to each tank for food.

Isopods are very easy to keep. Check the tanks daily to make sure the surface of the soil is damp. Dampen it with a water mister if necessary. Remove and replace any moldy food.
