In Sound Lesson 4, students make sounds with rulers.

Sound

Introduce your students to sound and energy with this physical science unit for grades 2-4. Humans can hear and produce sound, but young children may not understand how or why. The investigations in this unit have your students building models and instruments to test the different variables that affect a sounds frequency (pitch) and loudness (volume). The unit is capped off when your students design and build their own instruments, using items from around the house, and present them to the class.

The STC Program™ is a basal, inquiry-based science curriculum for grades K–10 that covers life, earth, and physical sciences with technology. STC™ was developed by the National Science Resources Center based on research into how students learn best. The NSRC was established by the National Academies and the Smithsonian Institution.

By the end of the unit your students will understand that:

	Sound is a form of kinetic energy that may be generated by a variety of means. Sound travels as kinetic waves through different media.
	The pitch of sound varies with the frequency of vibration of the generating mechanism.
	The volume, or loudness, of sound depends on the amplitude of the vibration.
	Humans can both hear and produce sound.
	Sound may be generated by a variety of instruments.
