Learn how shape, volume, and density cause an object to sink or float in water in this physical science unit for grades 4-6. Early investigations familiarize students with objects that will sink or float in water and will help them separate weight from density. Future investigations will challenge students to make objects that sink float and keep those objects afloat when weight is added. This unit teaches valuable problem-solving skills when students build clay or foil boats, encourages students to work through problems and improve their creations once they have found a sufficient solution.
The STC Program™ is a basal, inquiry-based science curriculum for grades K–10 that covers life, earth, and physical sciences with technology. STC™ was developed by the National Science Resources Center based on research into how students learn best. The NSRC was established by the National Academies and the Smithsonian Institution.

 |
By the end of the unit your students will understand that:
  |
Several
factors affect the buoyancy of an object. |
  |
Water
pushes up on floating and sinking objects with a
buoyant force. Because of this, objects appear
to weigh less when submerged. |
 |
The
amount of liquid an object displaces is directly
related to its volume. |
 |
The
buoyant force on an object varies with the
density of the liquid in which it is submerged. |
 |
Objects
that weigh more than an equal volume of water
sink; those that weigh less float. |
