GEMS® Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect (Grades 78)
GEMS Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect is designed to help you communicate the basics about global warming and the greenhouse effect to your students. Through a variety of laboratory activities, simulations, and discussions, your students will learn answers to questions such as: What is the greenhouse effect? In what way does the Earth’s atmosphere act like a greenhouse? Who and what is causing the problem? What are the uncertainties of this theory? Has global warming been observed yet? How much is the Earth likely to warm up? What are the consequences likely to be? If we decide that global warming is something to worry about, what can we do about it?

During the unit, students improve their understanding of a number of important scientific concepts, such as the molecular model of heat, ways in which energy is transferred, how objects attain a stable temperature, and the structure of the atmosphere.

Benefits of using this kit:

Introduces foundational science concepts that lead to student success
Strongly aligned with multiple state standards and the National Science Education Standards and Bench Marks for Science Literacy
Provides clear step-by-step instruction, assessment suggestions, literature connections, and ideas for further instruction

Goals of Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect

Students are able to explain and debate the major issues that relate to global warming.
Students are able to discuss some of the possible consequences of a warmer world and recognize the uncertainty of these predictions.
Students formulate their own opinions about what, if anything, should be done to slow the production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
Students formulate thoughtful questions about global warming and the greenhouse effect.
National Standards addressed by Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect:
