The GEMS® PEACHES program for Pre-K to Grade 1 sets the standard for inquiry-based practice in early childhood education for teachers and students. These fun-filled units integrate math skills with life, physical, and inquiry sciences to create engaging early-childhood science units. GEMS® PEACHES units increase the young learner’s ability to estimate, make inferences, and apply prior science and math knowledge to new learning situations in meaningful ways.
PEACHES Elephants and Their Young takes advantage of children’s natural curiosity in the largest and most powerful living land mammal and its unique physical characteristics, such as its trunk, tusks, and ears.
Elephants and Their Young activities have a strong emphasis on elephant structure and function, family interactions, and habitat, providing an important introduction to fundamental life science concepts; an examination of water in the lives of elephants supports key concepts in physical science. Additionally, children have opportunities to compare their heights with that of a newborn elephant, and continue to explore measurements as they examine and compare their footprints with those of adult elephants, young elephants, and baby elephants. By the end of the unit, children will have developed a deeper appreciation and respect for elephants and their plight.
