Why does an apple look red? That is the question! Light and color as key science topics. An accurate understanding of light and color occupies an essential place in science standards at every level. The GEMS
Color Analyzers unit engages students in fascinating investigations that effectively challenge commonly held misconceptions and lead to a fuller understanding of the nature of light and color. Students construct and use a tool called a color analyzer to observe phenomena that are normally hidden from view. Students work toward explaining what they see in their own words, and refine their explanations through group discussion and reflection. Using white light, students explore concepts of color and light and decode secret messages. By applying what they have learned about color and light, students then create their own secret messages. Absorption and reflection are covered within Activity 3. After combining earlier activities with this experience, students are ready to tackle the question of why objects have color.
