  GEMS® Bubble•ology (Grades 58)
Bubbles are not only captivating, colorful, and fun to make, they are also excellent demonstrations of scientific phenomena. Some of the topics introduced in GEMS Bubble•ology are: light and color, aerodynamics, chemical composition, surface tension, and technology. Students will also have an opportunity to develop a variety of skills useful in other areas of science and life, such as making observations, measuring and recording date, experimenting, calculating averages, graphing results, making inference, and drawing conclusions.

Each activity introduces concepts and skills that build upon what students have learned in previous activities. The early activities allow students to blow bubbles to their heart’s content. Giving free rein to this very natural impulse helps pave the way for later activities, which require that students blow bubbles and then not pop them.

Benefits of using this kit:

Introduces foundational science concepts that lead to student success
Strongly aligned with multiple state standards and the National Science Education Standards and Bench Marks for Science Literacy
Provides clear step-by-step instruction, assessment suggestions, literature connections, and ideas for further instruction

Goals of Bubble•ology

Students discover the properties of soap film and the ways that soap film creates bubbles, then apply this knowledge in a variety of situations.
Students learn to distinguish the fair and unfair elements of a test.
Students improve their ability to design controlled experiments.
Students explain how evaporation and surface tension impact a liquid’s ability to make bubbles.
Students predict how air currents affect bubbles in a variety of situations.
Students apply their knowledge of color patterns to predict when a bubble will pop.
National Standards addressed by Bubble•ology:
Physical Science Standard, 5–8: Properties and changes of properties in matter.
Inquiry Standard, 5–8: Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry.
Unifying Concepts and Principles: Form and function; constancy change and measurement.

In the Kit:
