For over 40 years, the staff of the
Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of
California, Berkeley, has been sharing the best tools for
science education. From the initial development of the first
units in 1984, GEMS has become an internationally recognized
name in inquiry science. With a growing library of over 70
units, GEMS® is being used worldwide.
The success of GEMS is due to its key features:
GEMS® guides support teachers with the information
they need to be successful with each unit, including
background information, preparation support,
step-by-step lesson instructions, and anticipated
outcomes. At the end of each unit, teachers can find
additional content, reading resources, writing
ideas, assessment options, and extensions to help
students further explore lesson concepts.
GEMS® units are clearly organized and easy to use. Although
many GEMS guides are designed, written, and tested for
specific grade levels, they often can be extended to lower
or higher levels. Many GEMS® Teacher’s Guides contain
suggestions for modifying or adapting the presentation for
younger or older students.
About GEMS Kits®
A GEMS Kit® contains all the materials necessary to present a GEMS unit to your class and includes one copy of the pertinent GEMS Teacher’s Guide®. Each GEMS Kit goes through an extensive development and review process. The result is a kit that meets the high standards of GEMS and Carolina, a kit you can use with confidence.
